Africa bears brunt as HIV cases soar

5 million people have been infected with HIV this year,

highest incidence in a single year.

Worldwide to 39.4 million, up from 37.8 million last year.

Deaths of 3.1 million people from AIDS-related illnesses during the year.

Sub-Saharan Africa only 10 per cent of the world's population,

accounts for more than 60 per cent of all people living with HIV.

An estimated 25.4 million people are infected in Africa,

up from 25 million last year.

2 million adults and children died from AIDS-related illnesses on the continent this year.

Eastern Europe and central Asia, 1.4 million people living with HIV,

an increase of 40 per cent from 2002.

East Asia, with a 50 per cent jump since 2002

women make up an increasing proportion of people with HIV.
